In California, communities have been working for over a decade to reduce waste by half, in response to state law. As residents and businesses move beyond recycling to discover the importance of waste prevention, producer responsibility, sustainability and other waste reduction methods, there is growing frustration with the limitations of existing programs and solutions to meet our needs. The increasing cost of protecting the environment from the impacts of our discards cries out for more effective answers. Computers, refrigerators, tires, paint and batteries, and motor oil are only a few of the objects we use every day that cannot safely be buried in the ground. These are the steps a community can take to work toward solutions.
