District 5
Susan Collins
I've been happy to serve Orange County on the CRRA board since July 2000.
My efforts on the Board have centered around financial issues, including
conference sponsorship coordination for two years, and serving as Treasurer
of CRRA for two years.
For next year, I would like to focus my efforts on achieving the financial
goals set for the organization two years ago. CRRA emerged from a financial
crisis, recovering from a $100,000 loss in 2002 to fully solvent by the end
of 2003. We have fulfilled 4 of 6 financial goals, but still need to build
cash reserves to guard against future crises, and improve sponsorship
procedures.
The Orange County chapter is the smallest chapter in the State, with only 6
active members, but ALL of the chapter¹s members voted in the last CRRA
election. It would be great if that happened again!

I would like to be your representative on the CRRA Board of Directors. CRRA is an important organization, which needs the support of all of us to be successful. Through CRRA we are able to promote recycling, provide relevant training and build a network of recyclers. I have been a CRRA member since moving to California in 1990 and am willing to volunteer my time and effort to serve on the Board of Directors and represent District 7.
I believe I am qualified to serve on the CRRA Board. I have more than 25 years of recycling and solid waste experience, split between the public sector and private sector and I am currently the Manager of the San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority. My accomplishments include:
- In 1989 implementing, at the time, the largest curbside recycling program in the United States (250,000 homes in Miami)
- Managing the County of San Diego solid waste program which is 1994 was recognized by NRC as the best regional recycling program in the United States
- Exceeding the 50% diversion goal in 1998 by implementing real programs
- CRRA award for Outstanding Regional Government Program in 2003
- Coauthor of a Solid Waste Textbook
My education includes both a B.S. and M.S. from Duke University and a summer at Harvard’s School of Government Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government.
District 8
Julie Muir
I would like to serve on the California Resource Recovery Association’s Board of Directors representing District 8, which includes San Mateo , Santa Clara , San Benito , Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties . I have been very active with the California Collegiate Recycling Council (CCRC) and CRRA over the last nine years, serving on the executive board of CCRC in many different positions. I am basically the type of person that if I see something that needs to be done, I do it or organize others to complete the task. I have been involved in writing charters between CRRA and CCRC, planning and organizing workshops and conferences, and expanding membership.
For the last ten years, I have worked for Peninsula Sanitary Service, Inc. (PSSI) and the Stanford Recycling Center to promote and improve Stanford University‘s waste reduction and recycling program. I am involved in everything from public outreach to marketing recyclables and from routing to processing equipment.
If I am elected to the CRRA Board, I plan to be actively involved in the continual development of CRRA and the relationships and communication between CRRA and its members, technical councils, charters, and the National Recycling Coalition. In addition, I will work to increasing CRRA’s membership and examining the budget to make sure the organization is operating in the black. Finally, I will continue to promote CRRA as the source of knowledge in California on waste reduction and recycling issues.
I would appreciate your vote.

Shana M. Levy , MA, Green MBA
I have fourteen years experience in environmental communications, with a special focus in solid waste. I have worked in the non-profit, government and private sectors—all within the environmental arena. Today, I and my business partners at Gigantic Idea Studio, Inc. provide social marketing services to our clients, working to influence behaviors—especially waste reduction.
Besides my professional background, I believe that my academic experience lends itself to serving CRRA with skill and insight. I have a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences with an environmental concentration, as well as a minor in Conservation & Resource Studies from the University of California at Berkeley . I also have a Master’s in Culture, Ecology & Sustainable Community and a Green MBA from the Institute for Environmental Entrepreneurship and New College of California, Santa Rosa . In addition, I have completed a certificate in Critical Thinking for Change Management.
I am a long-time member of CRRA (approximately ten years) and have participated in the organization as a conference speaker, sponsor and performer. I am strongly committed to the principles of CRRA, including the ultimate goal of Zero Waste. I hope you will allow me to represent CRRA’s 9th District in the coming year.
