Job Description :
San Diego Coastkeeper seeks a Development Coordinator to serve as an integral member of the Development team. Reporting to the Development Director, the Development Coordinator plays a significant role in maintaining and building Coastkeeper’s overall fundraising program. The Coordinator ensures the integrity of donor records, promptly acknowledges gifts, supports staff and high-level volunteers in developing major gifts, organizes events, including the annual Ocean Gala, mailings, and assists with grant writing and reporting. The Development Coordinator’s duties include but are not limited to
Grants:
- Work with the Development Director to draft grant proposals and prepare reports to funders.
- Assemble and maintain electronic and hard-copy files of all contracts, correspondence, and documents relating to funding requests.
- Research & summarize funder guidelines, primarily to identify new potential funding sources.
Individual Donor :
- Support donor cultivation/solicitation activities initiated by staff or Directors: maintain updated donor prospect lists, provide materials to staff/volunteer solicitors, schedule meetings with prospects, and participate in cultivation meetings as needed.
- Generate targeted mailing lists from database and new sources for cultivation/solicitation mailings and campaigns as needed; assemble and send mailings to lists.
- Provide basic membership support: send out new member packets, maintain & update e-newsletter subscription lists, maintain membership records and facilitate renewals.
Database and Donation Acknowledgements:
- Maintain accurate database records of all donations received, including grants and individual donations.
- Enter new people and organizations in database and maintain updated contact info on an ongoing basis.
- For grants received, maintain records of key information such as grant period and grant purpose.
- Create and send appropriately customized acknowledgement letters for every gift received from private funders.
- Participate in monthly reconciliation of finance and fundraising records of actual & forecasted gifts and grants.
- Assist in generating prospect & mailing lists from database, including ongoing cleanup and removal of duplications of data.
Events (major donor and general outreach):
- Work with Development Director to develop written content for events, campaigns, donor communications, and media communications.
- Assist Development Director and Event Manager will all aspects of the Ocean Gala (the largest, signature fundraiser of the year for Coastkeeper).
- Research venues based on size of audience, pricing, location as needed for large & small events throughout the year.
- Track and manage reservations in database, including communications with attendees by phone, email and letter.
- Create targeted mailing lists from database and new sources; assemble and send mailings (invitations, solicitations etc.) to lists.
- Assist with logistics including tracking production of printed materials, assembling materials, decorations, seating plans, etc.
- Assist with media relations as needed.
Departmental Support:
- Provide basic administrative support for the Development department; provide backup administrative support for the organization as needed.
- Maintain adequate supplies of standard fundraising materials such as information packets, auxiliary member toolkits, and publications.
- Other duties related to development and communications as assigned.
Desired Qualifications:
- College degree and two years of funding development experience (preferred)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and extremely detail-oriented person
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and database experience; Etapestry experience a plus
- Ability to work independently, and in a fast paced, dynamic environment
- Ability to maintain schedules and timelines
- Ability to work easily and effectively with donors
- Ability to work occasional early morning/evening/weekend hours
- Enjoy working as part of a team
- Fluency in Spanish a plus
- Interest in marine conservation encouraged; experience with environmental work a plus

We balance community outreach, education, and advocacy to promote stewardship of clean water and a healthy coastal ecosystem. Coastkeeper’s staff of eight includes attorneys, marine scientists and administrative staff who oversee our programs and advocacy efforts.
Compensation and Terms:
Full-time position with occasional evening and weekend hours. Salary commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits package available.
