Description:
Perform on-site work at all types of businesses (retail, restaurant, hotels, shopping malls, offices and others) in the Southern California region to: (1) determine current level of solid waste and recycling service and desire of management/owner to participate in recycling program, (2) design recycling program and work with the local solid waste collection company and the City to implement the diversion program at the business, (3) provide follow-up support to the business, answer questions, and monitor diversion program results, and (4) report results to the City. Strong interpersonal skills are required to balance the need for an effective citywide recycling program with the operational and business requirements of the commercial sector and the city's waste hauler. Successful implementation will require diplomacy, tact, and perseverance.
This position requires working approximately 3 weeks of the month performing the site work described above at businesses in the Southern California region (Orange, San Diego, and Riverside Counties) and from EcoNomics' Irvine office. Approximately 5 business days per month will be spent working at EcoNomics' Los Olivos offices.
Position Responsibilities/Skills Required:
- Assist in the design and implementation of commercial recycling programs at businesses in several cities. Coordinate and monitor programs with each city's waste hauler, and attend monthly progress meetings with staff in each city. Prepare and update Excel spreadsheet to track the status of each business' diversion program. Submit the recycling database to each City monthly.
- Strong customer service skills and ability to telephone and meet with busy business owners and managers to discuss recycling programs and to obtain permission to implement diversion programs. Ability to be persistent, respectful and tactful and to diplomatically handle escalated situations.
- Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining contact with EcoNomics' main office via telephone and e-mail on important issues. Ability to organize data while in the field and to stay in contact with City staff by promptly returning telephone calls and responding to e-mails while in the field. Ability to be a self-starter coupled with the confidence to ask for help and direction when needed.
- Must be comfortable adapting to a changing travel schedule, some long hours, and the needs of City staff and the businesses implementing diversion programs.
- Ability to effectively apply strong organizational skills to manage detail-oriented tasks such as database upkeep and maintenance.
- Excellent writing skills to prepare reports, agendas, updates, and memorandums to City clients and recycling proposals for businesses.
Education Requirements:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a college or university with major work in Environmental Science, Business, Public Administration, Engineering, Mathematics, Political Science, Communications, or a related field. Two years of active involvement in environmental activities or in the solid waste/recycling field (such as volunteer experience, internships, externships or work-study experience) is highly desirable, as is a deep commitment to the environment. Valid California driver's license is required. The successful candidate will train in EcoNomics' Los Olivos office for a period of 3-4 months during which they will travel approximately 3 days per week to the Southern California region. After the initial training period, the position will be based in EcoNomics' Irvine office with travel at least monthly to the Los Olivos office.
