Position Summary:
Responsible for environmental campaign strategy, lobbying, coalition building, media outreach, and grant seeking.
Representative Responsibilities:
- The following responsibilities are general duties that a particular employee in this position may or may not be required to perform. The actual duties required of this position will vary.
- Create a plan to win on our environmental campaigns. Formulate strategy on how to gain political support for our agenda through coalition-building, grassroots organizing, media publicity, endorsements and message development.
- Develop and extends relationships in support of Allied Waste's environmental efforts. Cultivate and leverage the influence and authority of the South Bay Waste Management Authority (SBWMA), and other governmental and health agencies to address environmental policy priorities.
- Monitors legislative and regulatory issues of concern to Allied Waste and the SBWMA. Proactively advocates our policy agenda priorities within the Chamber of Commerce.
- Submits periodic updates and reports to the General Manager for Allied Waste of San Mateo and Executive Director of the SBWMA on the status.
- Works with Allied Waste of San Mateo and SBWMA staff to prioritize agenda in terms of grassroots efforts/needs, develops campaign plans and works to gain support on the issues identified for grassroots support.
- Documents and shares efforts and initiatives that have potential to be promising and best practices for Allied Waste and SBWMA.
- Closely monitors and tracks community, local, and state advocacy issues of concern to the SBWMA and initiates appropriate activities as needed.
Experience, Education and Certification:
Required:
- Equivalent of high school diploma or G.E.D. certification.
- Two years of experience in environmental strategy and planning.
- Six years of experience in either environmental service or protection.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science or public administration or related discipline.
- 8 – 10 years of work experience in either environmental service or protection or outreach.
- Working knowledge of governmental agencies, the regulatory process, and the administration of environmental programs and services.
- Experience working with multiple internal and external constituencies.
- Detailed knowledge of environmental policy and protection.
Knowledge and Competencies:

- Knowledge and understanding of having experienced building community relations and the understanding of local politics.
- Knowledge of all facets of campaign strategy and implementation including research, prospecting and promotion.
- Knowledge of government or public relations obtained through a completion of business degree, marketing or closely related field.
- Knowledge and understanding of going “green”.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent presentation skills.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks.

- Office equipment including, but not limited to, computer, phone, fax machine, copier and calculator.

Environmental/Atmospheric Working Conditions:
The following environmental/atmospheric working conditions are commonly, but not always, associated with the performance of this position. The actual working conditions will vary.
- Office environment
- Travel by car required 50% of the time.
