PASADENA, CA -- (February 14, 2006) – The City of Pasadena, in collaboration with SCS Engineers and the Rose Bowl, successfully recycled more than eight tons of waste at the 2006 Bowl Championship Series (BCS) Game, which took place on January 4, 2006 at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, Calif.

SCS Engineers was retained by the City of Pasadena to design, implement, and manage a comprehensive recycling program for materials generated in the stadium and during pre-game activities including alumni celebrations, tailgate parties, corporate celebrations, media tents, and other events.

The recycling program diverted more than seven tons of single serving beverage containers, .4 tons of mixed recyclables, and .7 tons of cardboard from the stadium and special events. Waste haulers also were required by a City of Pasadena ordinance to divert 50 percent of the waste stream. The Los Angeles Conservation Corps (LACC), a non-profit organization, estimates 70 percent of the bottles and cans generated throughout the pre-game activities and stadium were collected for recycling.

The program's success was due in large part to outreach efforts to the stadium vendors and event managers prior to the pre-game activities. The City of Pasadena and LACC dispersed bins throughout the event area, Coca-Cola donated recycling bins for the stadium concourse, Allen Company provided cardboard recycling services, and the LACC handed out recycling bags to tailgaters and collected and diverted the single serving beverage containers from the special events and stadium seating area. This was the first year since the program began that cardboard recycling was available to the special event organizers. The LACC reports having collected the most bottles and cans in a single day since it was formed 20 years ago.
