California Cities and Counties

Dear California Recycling Coordinator:

The fifth annual celebration of America Recycles Day will take place on November 15, 2001. Cities and Counties throughout the country will hold events to promote recycling and waste reduction programs, and to highlight the contributions that recycling and resource conservation make to both our environment and the economy.

The California Steering Committee asks you to join us in demonstrating California's recycling leadership, by planning and implementing events in your community during the period of November 10-17, 2001.

Ideas for events could include:

• Put on a recycled-content products fair to promote "Closing the Loop"
• Adopt a local resolution declaring November 10-17th as California Recycles Week for your community
• Update and distribute new public education materials
• Work with local schools and artists to hold an "Art from Scrap" contest or show. see www.ciwmb.ca.gov/schools
• Provide recognition to local businesses in your community that make a contribution to your waste reduction efforts. Look for more information about award-winning business efforts from your city or county on the web-site for the California Integrated Waste Management Board at www.ciwmb.ca.gov/WRAP
• Contact Gene Harm at the Department of Conservation (916) 323-1886 to help you plan a recycling collection and promotion event during California Recycles Week Additional ideas and resources may be found at the national web site, www.AmericaRecyclesDay.org, at the CRRA web site, www.crra.com, or COMING SOON! at the California web site, www.recycleday.com.
