Impacts of Compostable Plastics on Composting and Recycling Processes -Part One Desert Suite 1 & 2The vision for compostable plastics is to help us strive toward zero waste. But, in reality, what are we achieving? This two-part session will explore the impacts of compostable plastics on both the composting and recycling processes and discuss solutions among the stakeholders. Special Wastes Fiesta 1&2Come and find out why special wastes are "special." This session will address issues such as who is responsible for special wastes and what you can do to get the public participating in special waste programs. Speakers: "Assuming Responsibility for E-Waste through Recycling Initiatives: Emerging Issues with "Product Stewardship Initiatives," Carl Smith, Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) "Household Hazardous Waste Recycling in San Jose: Who Participates?" Multifamily Recycling Programs Fiesta 3Apartments! Condominiums! Townhomes! If these multifamily words bring terror into your heart, this is the session for you! Recycling in this sector has traditionally been one the most challenging areas for most programs. In this session, you will learn what barriers are keeping programs at low participation, and high contamination, rates. Learn how the City of Los Angeles developed a program to provide service to over 300,000 multifamily residential units. On a different approach, Monterey Bay focused on utilizing grant funding to implement comprehensive recycling and waste reduction programs at one hundred low-income multifamily housing complexes. Although using different approaches, both programs offered technical assistance, outreach and education and all the challenges of transition from the pilot to a permanent program. Come and learn why some neighborhoods participate less and how to modify programs to increase participation rates in diverse communities. Speakers: "Understanding and Cracking Barriers to Recycling Participation," Maggie Clarke, Ph.D, Maggie Clarke Environmental "Moving In: Establishing a Voluntary Multifamily Residential Recycling Program," Benet Sanchez, City of Los Angeles "Monterey Bay Area Regional Low-Income Multifamily Recycling Project," Mandy Caruso Brooks, Ecology Action of Santa Cruz Moderator: Jerry Nelson, City of San Jose Download
Sustainable Packaging and Recycling - Joining Forces Fiesta 7 & 8As the second session in a mini-track on packaging design, reuse and reduction; this panel will explore cutting-edge research, policy and program developments making a dent in the gap between packaging designers, purchasers of packaging materials, and recyclers who all together determine whether packaging materials end up reduced by design, in landfills or as new products manufactured from recycled materials. Topics include key components of Product Stewardship bills making their way through State Legislative Houses and how research by the Sustainable Packaging Coalition will help to craft better connected packaging reduction policy and programs. Companies, public agencies and institutions committed to product and overall environmental stewardship are increasingly investigating and utilizing packaging systems that, in comparison to traditional packaging, reduce energy consumption, solid waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Join us for robust discussion with the panelists as we attempt to formulate some ideas for better connecting the links in the packaging chain. Speakers: Martha (Leflar) Stevenson, GreenBlue Institute Heidi Sanborn, CA Product Stewardship Council Moderator: Rory Bakke, Sustainable Concepts Studio Download
Halfway to Zero - COOL 2012 Fiesta 6One human-made form of green house gas is methane coming from landfills. Meanwhile our soils are not getting the natural nutrients it needs for sustainable agriculture. 50% of what is landfilled material is compostable organics. The COOL 2012 campaign seeks to involve business and community in this international vision of going down the path to zero by managing organic resources by diverting compostable organics back to the earth. Speakers: Ruth Abbe, HDR, BVA Linda Peters, County of Hawaii Katherine Kellogg Johnson, Kellogg Garden Products Moderator: Linda Christopher, GRRN Download: Impacts of Compostable Plastics on Composting and Recycling Processes - Part Two Desert Suite 1 & 2You heard the vision and the perceptions of compostable plastics in Part One of this series. Part Two continues the action with an interactive dialog between the moderator, attendees, and key stakeholders. Find out the realities of what we are achieving in this session, exploring the impacts of compostable plastics on both the composting and recycling processes. Reuse and Repair Statewide Overview Desert Suite 1 & 2Reuse and Repair are important Zero Waste Plan components and major parts of every economic system, yet little is known about the industry as a whole. In addition, because reuse and repair are very hard to track and quantify, local activities do not generally receive the programmatic attention they deserve. With this session, we will discuss what is being done in California to harness this important waste diversion giant. Panelists: Rick Hicks, California Integrated Waste Management Board, Office of Local Assistance and Market Development Division Chris Mkpado, Owner, T-Waste Solutions Inc, Santa Barbara Marty Metro, Used Cardboard Box.com Karen Thoms, Habitat for Humanity, Orange County |
