Tour #4
Cal Trans District 7 Building, Debs Park & Interior Removal Specialists
The California Department of Transportation is very proud of the new District 7 headquarters building. This futuristic 13-story building defies convention while exemplifying the State’s extraordinary commitment to creativity, environmental sensitivity and design excellence in public architecture. This building, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne, is an illusive, ever-changing office building located in the heart of Los Angeles, California. The structure is wrapped in sheathing that opens and closes according to outside conditions. When the sun is bright, the building appears closed and windowless. The building’s south façade is entirely surfaced with photovoltaic cells, which extend from the fourth to the thirteenth floors and generate approximately 5% of the building’s energy while shielding the façade from direct sunlight during peak summer hours. This and other environmentally-friendly features are part of the building’s LEED-Silver rating.
The National Audobon Society's 300-acre Ernest E. Debs Park ("Debs Park"), home to 136 bird species, is an urban nature center located near downtown Los Angeles. The park's 5,000-square-foot Audobon Nature Center, certified as LEED-Platinum, is a showcase of conservation-minded design. Amongst its state of the art green features, it runs exclusively on solar power, collects rainwater to irrigate plants, and all of its wastewater is treated on site. On this tour, you will learn how the Audobon Nature Center became the first building in the nation to receive the Platinum Rating under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Green Building Rating SystemTM 2.1. You'll also discover how sunflower seeds and melted down handguns were used in the construction of this ultra-"green" environmental education center.
Interior Removal Specialist, Inc.
9309 Rayo Ave, South Gate, CA 90280
Interior Removal Specialist, Inc., a demolition contractor in the Los Angeles area, has been practicing environmentally responsible demolition for nearly 15 years. With a modest beginning, IRS Demo soon became the premier demolition contractor in the area due to the cleanliness, speed, and attention to detail that the company exhibits. Soon, that attention to detail moved the company to try a new approach to recycling the materials that they took out of the buildings that they worked in. In 2003 Interior Removal Specialist, Inc. moved into a new facility in South Gate, CA, where they finally had the room to expand their recycling capabilities. From recycling the easy materials like steel, copper, and aluminum, IRS Demo initiated pilot programs to recycle drywall, ceiling tiles, and carpeting, and began an aggressive donation program to further divert and re-use furniture and other items recovered from their jobs.
Since 2003, IRS Demo has donated more than 4,000 tons of materials to many local non-profit agencies, and is an industry leader in the shipping of drywall, ceiling tiles, and carpet for recycling. IRS Demo ships more than 900 tons of drywall to recyclers every month, and has been named the number one supplier of recyclable ceiling tiles in the Western United States. In 2005, Interior Removal Specialist, Inc. received their Processing Permit from the California Integrated Waste Management Board, and is the only facility in Southern California that specializes strictly in tenant improvement demolition debris.
2006 was a banner year for the company. Not only did Interior Removal Specialist, Inc. have the largest sales year in the history of the company, but was recognized with awards including the CRRA Recycling Award, WRAP of The Year from the California Integrated Waste Management Board, and both Gold and Silver Awards from the Solid Waste Association of North America.
