Francis makes a long trek for the environment
For 22 years John Francis' feet were his only mode of transportation, and he spent 17 of those years in silence. With his banjo as his sole companion, plus the friends he would make along the way, Francis decided to stop riding in cars after he saw an oil spill in San Francisco in 1971. The self-proclaimed hippie called it "an environmental insult that you just couldn't turn away from."

He plucked at his banjo as he began telling his story to a crowded room of environmentalists at the California Resource Recovery Association's 31st annual conference in San Pedro on Monday morning.
