Day Trip to Catalina Island
Saturday, July 28, 2007
Join CRRA with your friends and
family for a day trip to Catalina
Island, once home to real Chinese
pirates. Located 22 miles from
the Los Angeles/ Orange County
coast, Catalina Island still retains
the charm and hospitality of days
gone by. There are no freeways or
traffic lights on Catalina. The most
common mode of transportation is
walking, bicycles or golf carts. The
streets are lined with palm trees,
the waters surrounding the island
are crystal blue, the air is clean, and
the island has nearly perfect yearround
weather. CRRA has secured
a reduced group rate for tickets to
the Island. Once there, enjoy one of
many offered local tours, eat at one
of over 25 restaurants, shop along
the beachfront, or just enjoy the
water. For more information about

| CRRA Theater Presents Trashed by Bill Kirkos
Tuesday, July 31, 2007, 1:15 – 2:45
“Trashed” is a provocative investigation
of one of the fastest growing industries
in North America. The garbage business.
The film examines a fundamental
element of modern American culture…
the disposal of what our society defines
as “waste.” It is an issue influenced by
every American, most of whom never
consider the consequences. Nor, it
seems, the implications to our biosphere.
At times humorous, but deeply
poignant, “Trashed” examines the
American waste stream fast approaching
a half billion tons annually.
Tuesday Exhibit Hall Activities (continued)
What are the effects all this waste will
have on already strained natural resources?
Why is so much of it produced?
While every American creates almost 5
pounds of it every day, who is affected
most? And who wants America to make
more? The film analyzes the causes
and effects of the seemingly innocuous
act of “taking out the garbage” while
showcasing the individuals, activists,
corporate and advocacy groups working
to affect change and reform the current
model. “Trashed” is an informative
and thought-provoking film everyone
interested in the future of sustainability
should see. Bill Kirkos will be available
for discussion following the film. |

Recyclergy by Jeremy Keller
Tuesday, July 31, 2007, 3:40 – 4:30
For decades the San Francisco Bay
Area has been a hub for the recycling
movement. Even the garbage companies
have a long history of recycling
practices. After the first Earth Day in
1970, community, non-profit recycling
centers appeared in schools, garages,
and neighborhood centers-with the
goal of bringing recycling to their cities.
Now only two non-profit recycling
organizations remain in San Francisco.
Despite the lack of surviving community
recycling centers, the Bay Area
is still home to a unique community
of recyclers who push the envelope
of possibilities. Featuring interviews
with recycling pioneers and music by
Rube Waddell, “The Recyclergy” is an
entertaining examination of a fading
subculture. |
